The deep ocean is vast, remote, and largely invisible to most people, yet it plays a crucial role in global ecosystems and is increasingly central to societal debates about ocean use and stewardship. From a human perspective, it is often portrayed as alien or frightening – an image that can distance audiences from understanding and care. Communicating deep‑ocean science therefore requires approaches that can build familiarity and emotional connection.
Worm Party in the Deep is the working title of a research‑based children’s book that uses storytelling to foster deep‑ocean literacy. The book introduces deep-sea ecosystems, including “worm forests” associated with hydrothermal vents and cold seeps. By using a relatable characters, humor, and visual storytelling, the story highlights the richness and cooperation that characterizes deep‑sea life, making it less abstract for young audiences.
The book is being written by Mari H. Eilertsen in collaboration with illustrator Jane Zimmermann.
